Reliability and Effectiveness

The IUS is one of the most reliable methods of contraception.

Out of 100 women who use the IUS for one year, less than 1 woman becomes pregnant.

This high level of safety can otherwise only be achieved by sterilization.

For comparison (www.contraceptivetechnology.org):

  • Out of 100 women who are sterilized, less than 1 woman becomes pregnant within one year.
  • Out of 100 women who use a copper IUD for one year, less than 1 woman becomes pregnant.
  • Out of 100 women who use the pill for one year, 8 become pregnant.
  • Out of 100 women/couples who use condoms for one year, 15 become pregnant.

In Austria, about 200,000 women have currently opted for the hormonal IUS, which is about 10% of all women of childbearing age. Some have already opted for the second or third IUS since the insertion of their first one. Worldwide, about 12 million women have already had experience with the IUS.
